Chapter 1 part 1

“Hey Kassie what do you think of this hairstyle for our first day back to school?” Mia said holding up a picture of a girl that has a very complicated bun.
“Hmm. I don’t think it is you, but we can try it,” Kassie said as she picked up the hairbrush off the redwood dresser. She walked up and sat down on the black bed behind Mia and started brushing her long brown hair. “Let me see if I can get it right.” She moved her hair around and around while Mia handed her the scrunchy that was on her wrist. “There I think I got it right. Go look in the mirror.” Mia stood up and walked towards the mirror that sat on top of her dresser and checked herself in the mirror. Her hair was up just the way she wanted it. Kassie always was great with hair.
“It looks great!” she said as she turned around to face her best friend. “Now onto the makeup portion of our preparation,” she said as she picked up her make-up kit and walked back to the bed and sat down. She opened up the kit and pulled out a little container of eye shadow and started putting some on. “I think I’ll go dark and mysterious by adding some black eye shadow. What do you think?” she asked as she finished and looked over at Kassie.
“You look great; the eye shadow really brings out your brown eyes. Now what should we do about me?” Kassie asked as she picked up the abandoned magazine and started flipping through the pages. “None of the people have short, curly, blond hair like me. And none of these articles say anything about bringing out blue eyes. I have nothing to use as my inspiration,” she said dramatically flopping down on the bed and dropping the magazine. What she was saying was true, not too many people had hair like hers. Even though Mia had told her again and again that she wished she could have hair like hers, she still acted dramatic about being so different.
“Why don’t you just leave your hair alone? We both know that you are so beautiful that you don’t need anything to bring out your beauty. You’re so natural,” Mia said as she tried to get her friend to sit up. “Why don’t we take a break and go get some snacks out of the kitchen? My mom said that she would make us some cookies so we could be the little pigs she knows we are.” She finally got Kassie to stand up and dragged her out of her bedroom and led her to the kitchen. Her mother was indeed in the kitchen and she was letting her famous chocolate chip cookies cool off on the steel rack. When she saw them entering the kitchen she smiled. Kassie kept telling Mia how beautiful her mom was. With her shoulder-length dark brown hair tied back into a messy ponytail and dark brown eyes, she looked like an older version of Mia.
“Hello girls. How about a snack?” she motioned towards the cookie tray, “be careful. They’re still a little hot.” Mia and Kassie both picked up a cookie and started nibbling on the sweet treat. “So, school is starting soon. Do you guys have everything ready?”
“Yup, now we’re deciding what we’re going to look like on our first day. A good first impression is important you know?” Mia said through a mouthful of cookie.
“And you should know,” Kassie said picking up a napkin and dabbing her face. “Actually we’ve been deciding what she is going to wear. I can’t find anything that would work.”
“Well, whatever you choose I’m sure you’ll look great. Oh, I almost forgot something. Mia, could you come with me for a second?” Mia followed her but when Kassie started to come after them she held up her hand and said, “Kassie, why don’t you stay here. Don’t worry, we won’t be long.” She then left Kassie in the kitchen and lead Mia down the hallway. She then turned to face the wall and pushed at it until a staircase appeared before them. Then they started their departure down the steps. Mia knew very well that the house that she lived in held many secrets and passageways. She knew this because when she was little, she would wander the house and found many different tunnels. But this tunnel was not familiar to her, so she tried not to gape at the little room that was lit by candlelight that came up before her. The only thing in the little room was a table with a box on it with a lit candle.
