Chapter 2 Part 1

A FEW DAYS LATER

“Are you sure you have everything? Clothes? Toothbrush?” Mia’s mother asked frantically. She did this every year. As she was doing another check through the girl’s bags, Mia and Kassie did another make-up and hair check.
“Mom, we have everything. Can we go now? We’re going to be late.” Mia said putting her compact mirror back into her make-up bag. The opening ceremony started in a few hours, and she didn’t want to be late again just because her mother was trying to stall them.
“Just making sure. Looks like you have everything. Let me go get the teleporter started.” She walked away from the bags and headed into the garage where the teleporter stood. They only used to teleporter to get to and from school, so mostly it just collected dust. When her mom came back and gave the thumbs up, they headed down to the basement with her. The teleporter always looked like a giant can with a hole in it to Mia. Except for the many buttons and the light that shot out whenever somebody used it. Mia never liked the teleporter, She would much rather fly.
“Why don’t you go first Kassie? Mia will be there in just a moment.” She gave Kassie a hug good bye and motioned towards the teleporter. Mrs. Peterson never came to see her daughter go. Mia thought she was just unsupportive but Kassie just said that her mother thought it would be too sad to come see her go. Kassie hugged Mia and the stepped into the teleporter with her luggage. And then after a flash of light, she was gone. Mia’s mother turned to face her.
“Now Mia, do you have that amulet?” Mia took the amulet out that was hidden under her shirt. “Good. Now don’t let anyone know that you have that. And remember, never take it off” Then she gave her daughter a final hug goodbye. “Good luck, sweetie.” Then she let go and turned her around so that she faced the teleporter.
She walked into the teleporter and turned around to see her mother wave goodbye. Then a flash of light wrapped around her for a second. It was so bright that Mia had to close her eyes. When she opened her eyes again, she was in a dimly lit room. There were a few guards standing by the teleporter. Mia stepped out and left her luggage to be attended to, as it was taken to their rooms during the opening ceremony. She walked out of the room and entered a narrow hallway. The hallway was full of her classmates. They were all wearing the same thing: a red plaid skirt or pants, a white polo shirt, and black shoes. Mia had no idea why they were already wearing their uniforms when they didn’t have to until tomorrow.
“Mia, there you are! The ceremony is about to start.” Kassie said jumping up from behind her. Then she grabbed a hold of her arm and started pulling Mia to the cafeteria. The cafeteria always had red table clothes on all of the tables and a special table in the front where the teachers sat. They sat down at the table farthest from the teacher, since Mia could guess that none of them were happy that they were back. Then everyone got quiet suddenly as the head mistress, Mrs. Circe, walked up to a podium. She wore a long dark purple dress as always. Mia wondered if she ever got that thing washed.
“Welcome students, to a new school year. I hope you all had a wonderful summer…” Is she serious? This is the same speech she’s given every year. The only difference is the list of new kids that come every year. Mia doesn’t know what happened next because the next thing she heard was Kassie trying to wake her up.
“Mia, come on, wake up. You can sleep later once we get into our dorms.” She was waving some papers around that much be the papers that tell them where are rooms are. Not that they won’t get the same room every year.
“Okay, okay. I’m up.” Mia said, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She was lucky nobody was here but them. They left the cafeteria and walked the many stairs and hallways until they reached their room. Did the person who designed this place love mazes or something? They opened the door to reveal their room. It wasn’t mush. Their room was in the shape of an octagon with two beds on opposite sides of the room. There was one door that led to a very big closet, half for Kassie half for Mia. There was a see through door between the two beds that led to the balcony. There was another door next to Kassie’s bed that led to the bathroom.
“Ah, how I’ve missed this room. It’s so much more colorful than my room at home.” Kassie said as she belly flopped onto her bed. It was true, compared to this room her room looked totally gray. And it literally was. Her mother never let anything really colorful into their house.
“While you get reacquainted with your bed, I’ll be at the library. I want to see if there are any new books worth reading.” She tip toed out of the room while her friend was kissing her pillow. Then she ran down the hallway and down a flight of dimly lit stairs until she came up to a pair of double doors. She opened one of the doors and stepped inside.  She was greeted by rows and rows of books. For some reason, they always brought her peace of mind.
