Chapter 1 Part 2

“There is something I need to give you before you leave,” she walked across the room and picked up the box. Mia only heard her sound that serious when she was referring to her magic powers. Yes, she was a witch-as was Kassie-but for some reason whenever it was mentioned she turned all serious even in the happiest of moments. That’s why Kassie and she had to go to a private witch school in Britain. Sure people made fun their accents-mainly Kassie since she had a country accent- but they got in there for free and there were no witch schools in America. “You’ll need this if you are to go back to that horrible school again,” her mother said as she slipped something around Mia’s neck, making her realize where she was. Mia looked down and noticed a delicate amulet around her neck. It had a star that was just like the one on the back of her neck.
“Um…thanks,” she said, no way was she going to wear this for her first day of school.
“Now listen to me, Mia. You must never take off this amulet, do you hear me? Some very evil things are going on at that school and this will protect you.” Mia hadn’t a clue what her mother was talking about, but she didn’t want to accuse her of being crazy. Sure the people weren’t very nice, but there was no need for a charmed necklace to protect her from bullies that had nothing better to do than make fun of the Americans.
“Yeah, sure Mom,” she said kind of nervously. “Can I go back upstairs now? I don’t want to keep Kassie waiting.” She was already heading upstairs even though her mother hadn’t answered her question.
“There may not be a need to. Her mother is going to be here to pick her up in just a few minutes.” Just as she was saying it, there was a knock at the door. Mia was betting her allowance that that was Kassie’s mom, here to ruin their good time like always. They both reached the top of the stairs just as the door started banging even louder. Is she planning on breaking our door down? Mia thought to herself. Her mom went up and opened the door.
“Why hello Mrs.—”
“Were you planning on answering the door before the next ice age or are you just slow?” Mrs. Peterson snapped. Mrs. Peterson didn’t like her mom. And she made it her business to make it show. With her blond hair pulled into a bun so tight it looked like the skin on her face was going to rip any second, and her gray business suit looking extra boring today.  “Kassandra, it is time to come home. Hello Mia, it is good to see you again.” Who was she fooling? Mia knew that Mrs. Peterson didn’t like her any more than she liked her mother. And why does she always call Kassie Kassandra? She knows Kassie hates to be called that.
“Bye Mia. See you tomorrow. Thanks for having me over Mrs. Scarlett.” With a hug for Mia and a wave to Mrs. Scarlet, Kassie walked away with her mother. Then Mia’s mother closed the door and walked back down the hallway towards the kitchen. Mia could have sworn she heard her mother muttering something along the lines of …hate that woman. Who does she think…. Mia just walked back towards her room so she could put everything away.
